Jim Barry

Jim Barry started making wine in Clare Valley in 1947 after graduating with a diploma in viticulture from the now famous Roseworthy Agricultural University. He took up the offer to work at the Clare Valley Winery and became the first qualification holding winemaker in Clare Valley.

In 1959, Jim, with his wife Nancy, purchased their first piece of land on the northern outskirts of Clare. Using the knowledge and experience gained over many years, he set up his own winery in 1973 and his first vintage was in 1974. During his 57 years of wine making, he experienced many changes. “When I first came to the Clare Valley, we moved grapes around with a horse and cart.

Today our business is on a global scale but there is one thing that hasn’t changed. That is the quality of our wine. Ultimately, wine itself is the most important thing. “Jim Barry passed away in 2004 and now his 3 sons are continuing on with the tradition that he built, and running the winery.

Jim Barry The Barry Brothers Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Just as the two previous generations brought new and innovative viticultural and winemaking ideas to Jim Barry Wines, we are determined to forge our individual mark. We have taken inspiration from our family’s history to create this wine. Our two favourite varieties, Shiraz and Cabernet, were blended to deliver a contemporary expression of this traditional Australian style.

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Riesling

Jim Barry purchased the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977 as he was sure that it would “produce some of the best Riesling in Clare”. Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 meters, and is ideal for producing steely, minerally Rieslings, distinctive to the area. Clare is one of the few regions in the world that produce this dry, delicate style with less than 2 grams of residual sugar per liter. The wine is a brilliant, very pale straw color, with a greenish tinge. The nose shows lovely floral characters, blossom notes and pear/lime juice aromas. The palate is dry, with sharply focused tangy lemon rind and lime fruit flavors. Its chalky texture balances the steely crisp acid with a very long, limey finish. A wine to be enjoyed now or after it has aged gracefully.

Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz

In 1977 when Jim Barry first purchased the Lodge Hill property, his intention was to devote the entire area to Riesling. However, there was a small area which had a gentle slope facing north, capturing the warmer conditions of the elevated site and he decided that it was an ideal place to grow a premium Shiraz. This wine is inky, deep red in color, with aromas of black, cherry, dark plums, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate shows medium to full bodied ripe black cherry and plum fruit, subtle integrated vanillin oak with mocha richness. The fine grained talc-like soft tannins support a lingering finish. It can by enjoyed now but it will improve with careful cellaring over the next 5-7 years. 100% Shiraz

Jim Barry The Florita Riesling

This micro batch super premium Riesling is the fruit of all those years of patience. individual rows where the terra rossa and loam barely cover the deep limestone below are selected. To guarantee the freshness of these precious grapes, we carefully picked batches to precisely fill our membrane press in the chill of night, and destemmed the bunches without crushing them. Only the finest 40% of the juice was used in this pristine, intense, beautifully citric Riesling. The Florita is pale straw with green tints and super steely aromas with dried lime and floral notes. It has complex undertones of wet slate, pink grapefruit, tangerine and lychee. It is extremely long on the palate with piercing lemon sorbet, paw, paw and frangipani flavors and a fresh juicy finish.

Jim Barry The Armagh

The name “Armagh” was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hill after their homeland. The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and yields less than 2 tonnes per acre. Aged for 16 months in American oak and French oak, The Armagh is black-purple in color and displays a nose of lifted, aromatic, blueberry/blackberry cassis, cedary oak, spice and complex, underlying savory characters. The palate is huge and dense, with fully integrated oak, yet still featuring complex fruits of plum, blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry. It shows deep, brooding consistency, with the flavor and texture of chocolate mudcake. This wine is ideal for long term cellaring. It is suggested that the wine be allowed to breathe a minimum of 2 hours before being consumed to fully appreciate the distinctive flavors and aromas. Oak treatment: 16 months in French and American oak ■ Grape Variety 100% Shiraz
