Wine Maker

Wirra Wirra Vineyards was originally established in 1894 by known South Australian eccentric and cricketer Robert Strangways Wigley. The winery prospered in its early days, producing many wines including a much acclaimed Shiraz, which was exported to England and the Empire until his death in 1926. The winery ran into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. In 1969 under the watchful eye of the late Greg Trott and his cousin Roger, the winery was rebuilt from the remnants of two walls and some slate fermenting tanks. As with all subsequent Trott endeavours, it was the sheer magnitude and unlikeliness of the project that made it so attractive.

Wirra Wirra Vineyards Catapult Shiraz

The late Greg Trott saw many of his dreams realised at Wirra Wirra. Yet one vision eluded him – to build a medieval siege machine, or trebuchet. Why? To use as a catapult to bomb neighbouring wineries with bottles of wine of course. This wine is part of a range, The RGT Collection which remembers the Pioneering spirit of Richard Gregory Trott. Classic McLaren Vale Shiraz with a touch of Viognier – just for something different. Just like Trotty.

Wirra Wirra Vineyards Church Block Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Merlot

Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972. He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (Est 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirra’s century old ironstone cellars. Over four decades, the Church Block label has become an Australian favourite.

Wirra Wirra Vineyards Original Blend Grenache Shiraz

In 1972, cousins Greg and Roger Trott produced a dry red wine from grapes grown on Greg’s vineyard adjacent to the small Bethany Chapel opposite Wirra Wirra. This blend of Grenache and Shiraz became the first “Church Block”. Taking on advice from friends and mentors, Trott evolved Church Block over the years to its popular signature blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Yet still there were those who bemoaned the loss of the original blend of Grenache and Shiraz. So at various times over the years, when the planets have aligned, Wirra Wirra have re-created the Grenache Shiraz offering and released it under the imaginatively titled “Original Blend” moniker. With a look and feel harking back to simpler times, this latest release of Original Blend Grenache Shiraz is limited in number, but not imagination.

Wirra Wirra Vineyards Dead Ringer Cabernet Sauvignon

The 3/4 Tonne Angelus Bell that sits proudly atop our cellars is rung to announce the start and finish of each vintage at McLaren Vale and for other suitable celebrations. For generations it rung out thrice daily from Jesuit Church at Norwood, SA at 6am, Midday and 6pm, calling the faithful to joyful prayer. In honour of that tradition, the name "The Angelus" is reserved for only exceptional parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon which are selected and vinified at Wirra Wirra.
